FML? Wait a minute...

("fuck my life")

"First off I think it's a lame term because of what it means; FUCK MY LIFE? Anyone who I have seen use it has the basic necessities to live with. Such as a job and are going to school or has gone already.

Second if your really pissed about your life, have some balls and say it, fuck my life! and it better be a better reason than "oh, I gotta work but I am too hungover" or "I have to go to class to get an education I don't really want."

Third I know most people are saying it in the spur of the moment. I've said stuff in the moment too but alas I have tried to really think about saying things like that and get some perspective.

Lastly I think most people just say it to say it with no real meaning to it so all this getting worked up probably doesn't means a damn thing! BUT it is still a shame that people use it as loosely as "love." (ie: "If you do this for me, i will love you forever,"etc) That is all. Good day peeps."

  • The origins of the term FML (fuck my life): Made popular by the teen movie Superbad (2007), in the scene where the employee at the liquor says "Fuck My Life." fml is an easier, faster way of saying something when nothings going your way.
  • Its also the name of a popular website, www.fmylife.com (2008), where people post their embarrassing stories. They all start with Today and end with FML.

  2. That is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Are you implying that curse words should have the same meaning as professions of love? Also, you might want to get off the high horse and recognize that people say things for the hell of it and though it may be a good goal to be careful what you say, you just stop living life in the process. It's fuck MY life, not yours so I don't see a problem. I highly doubt anyone is saying "I am an orphan who lives on the street starving and therefore am one of the only people who is allowed to say FML." So stupid. It's one thing to be conservative and another to sound like an uppity pseudo elitist prick. Also, attn fragments.

  3. Upon further deliberation, I have decided to pick apart the post. Your first point is biased. I highly doubt you associate in various circles in which you could this with any type of certainty. Also, you are probably not privy to most peoples' deepest secrets and problems. So maybe their FMLs are warranted.

Second point - Who are you to judge when it is appropriate to say FML? Are you really that grateful for EVERYTHING that you have that you don't bitch and moan because that would make you a hypocrite. The basis of your authority to make such claims would therefore be undermined.

Third point - I already touched upon this but if everyone said what they meant and only what they meant life would be boring. But hey, maybe you like to lead a boring life. However, your judgement imposes your views on how others should conduct their communication and thoughts.

Last point - Too idiotic to say anything decent without sounding like a dumbass myself.

** Everything I have said I meant 100%. Posts like this remind me of how close-minded people sit on a high horse and don't keep in touch with reality. Odds are, Mr./Mrs. Author, you're a hypocrite.

  5. First off before I get into it. This was a matter of personal opinion and I knew it would pinch a nerve with someone who would take it too seriously. Here we go.

Are you implying that curse words should have the same meaning as professions of love?

Not at all. What I am saying is that people should think about how they use the term before using it. Love is just one example. The use of the word hate is another. I have heard that term used very loosely as well and again its a damn shame.

My first point isn't biased. The people I have seen use it I know personally and I can tell you that they are using the term when it comes to work, going to school, computer keeps crashing, they have to run errands, etc. We are in a recession with 10% unemployment nationwide and 12% alone in California and I know a few people close to me that are unemployed, so to hear people say FML because they have to go to work or go to school they should think twice about using it. Now if someone just says FML with no hint of context then of course I don't know what they are talking about. It could be their mother just died, or someone close to them got cancer, but I didn't complain about those people and in their case its perfectly warranted because they have a legit gripe.

So your saying that if someone got too drunk and they are hungover running on 2 hours of sleep its a perfectly good reason to drop FML when in fact they are irresponsible knowing they have to work but get hammered the night before? I don't bitch and moan when its my own fault and even then I try to put everything into perspective. If you read it thoroughly though you would have noticed that I said I am guilty of saying things without thinking twice and am trying to put things into perspective because believe it or not their is real tragedy in the world.

How would life be boring? I don't see how being honest and trying to get some perspective is living a boring life? I don't lead a boring life I just like to count my blessings and I know I am fortunate more fortunate then most and I think people complain about things that really is peanuts to most who are getting kicked out of their homes or losing someone close to them or losing their job when they have a family to take care of. Those are legit gripes.

How is it too idiotic? All I said was people say it with no real meaning and don't have perspective. In these times with so many real issues I would like to think that people say things they mean.

I said what I meant and its unfortunate that you overlook getting some perspective. You don't know me or anything about me. Your basing your opinion of me on a response I put on facebook in a matter of minutes. Your calling me an uppity elitist prick who is close minded and a hypocrite who needs to get off my high horse because I am not in touch with reality? When I have two parents who came here with absolutely NOTHING and worked hard for every single penny they have made in their life and it paid off. I see people struggling who have worked hard and did things the right way and yet because people couldn't get their spending under control and lived way beyond their means and almost brought this damn economy down they are getting punished and now can't find work and I am lucky to have a job. And your telling me I am close minded? I am close minded for trying to stop and think and say "Hey is my life really that bad? When I got a job, health, a working car to get my around, an amazing family?" You've clearly missed my entire point. You can bitch about anything and drop FML all day BUT put things into perspective because their is real tragedy in the world besides peoples small problems of being too hungover or they have to go to work or not wanting to work hard and earn everything they have (I personally know 2 people like this) and bitch when they don't get a hand out.

  6. Then perhaps it was the writing style that I took issue with for writing tends to reflect a persons frame of mind.
