No Regrets (Venus Speaks) by Toki Tali

"I woke up today feeling extremely peaceful, harmonious, and enlightened. I needed that more than anything at this point because my life has been nothing but chaotic within the past six months. A lot of it had to do with the appearance of this one particular person, who unfortunately, possessed the ability to drive me up the wall. I had hopes early on because of the rare chemistry I thought we had and the sweet, ethereal things that were being told. But as unexpected as the way he’d came to my life, hopes were also quick to deteriorate as I became tired of dealing with all the constant “hot and cold”. While the realistic part of me had let go a long time ago, the hopeless romantic side was still hanging on to something that was nothing but ever … anything.

I just couldn’t understand why things had to be complicated and confusing when we were two beautiful, interesting people with a great connection and so much potential. But instead, many things were being unclear, questions unasked and things left unanswered. I didn’t want to be like all of the other “thirsty” women out there who would constantly pressure to have the “talk” so I decided to walk away gracefully, not knowing how he felt.

But how does one move on from an experience that left them feel misunderstood and treated unfairly? In a traditional relationship, two people fall in love then break up because they got bored or one person found someone else. But at least, they can eventually move on because they knew why. In a situation where there was never a beginning or an ending, nothing went wrong yet it never felt right, there was no valid reason or explanation for why it didn’t and couldn’t work. How would one make sense of that, get closure and then forget?

And yet, I was able to finally give myself that closure today. It just struck me like a lightning rod at noon that some things were just not meant to be. Therefore, the sooner we can accept the however unpleasant outcome and let go, the better. But more importantly, we should never allow ourselves to feel bothered by the unwise decisions or misjudgments of others. Indeed I feel very proud of myself for the way I’ve handled this situation. Any other woman would have come out of this difficult circumstance feeling insane but I have been taught early on to bounce back from a fall with grace. Well, I certainly did.

It has definitely not been the first time I met a guy whom I could picture myself going totally crazy for and having a beautiful relationship with but as soon as things started to progress, that person would begin to push me away because they got scared or felt threatened. How was it my fault if someone wouldn't trust me and let me in because they were just too insecure with themselves? I can’t help the fact that I’m beautiful, smart, popular, confident, caring, and have my shit together. And so if someone was to ever think that they were NOT good enough for me, they were probably right.

But if they were to assume that I wouldn't be a good fit for them without even bother trying to get to know me, well: too bad for them. And that’s okay because there’s an AMAZING guy out there somewhere that is actually deserving of all I have to offer. I know I’ll meet him one day and he wouldn’t be afraid to give me those benefits of the doubt."

Cop Out [movie review] 2010

Starring: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Michelle Trachtenberg, Jason Lee, Ana de la Reguera
Director: Kevin Smith
Writer(s): Robb Cullen & Mark Cullen
Filmed At: New York, USA
Rated: R ; pervasive language including sexual references, violence & brief sexuality.
THE FAN:

"One of Cop Out's biggest charms is that it feels like a buddy cop comedy you've seen before, but have forgotten how much you enjoy it. The film feels similar to a 48 Hrs or Beverly Hills Cop film. Cop Out is pretty much what you expect when it comes to roles Bruce Willis chooses as it's pretty much no different than his role as John McClane on the surface, but he's a lot funnier this time around. As far as Tracy Morgan goes, the funniest thing I could remember him saying was his one line in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ("Man... I don't know what the f--- you just said, Little Kid, but you're special man, you reached out, and you touched a brother's heart.") until this film. He was downright hilarious at times. The only person who was funnier than Morgan was Seann William Scott who stole every scene he was in. Even though Kevin Smith didn't pen the script this time around, it still feels like a Kevin Smith film. It could be due to the fact that Jason Lee has a small role in the film, but I like to think it's because Cop Out offers the same kind of comedy you'd find in a Kevin Smith film with a bit more action. It also took me forever to place Scarface from Half Baked as Poh Boy.

Cop Out is surprisingly funny and incredibly entertaining. Give this film a chance even if the trailers may not be doing anything for you. I felt the same way and wound up thoroughly enjoying the film. After a long, stressful day at work, an R-rated comedy with a lot of laughs is one of the best ways to relax and this film offers just that. It's a great film to go into with no expectations other than to just have a good time. This might just be the funniest film released in 2010 thus far."

THE ANTI-FAN:

A cop and his long time partner attempt to recover his stolen property before his daughter's wedding. This buddy cop film marks a new low for Bruce Willis, who seems to have agreed to star in this movie for the paycheck. Don't expect much from former competent director and writer, Kevin Smith, whose comedic inspiration must have abandoned him while he created this tiring movie.

The dialog felt as if it were borrowed from other films of the same genre, but was made even worse by Tracey Morgan, who amazes me with his continued ability to find work in Hollywood without any recognizable talent. I can't see anyone enjoying this film after experiencing other great buddy cop films of the past. Even without having seen them, I still doubt you'd find this entertaining.

Female Stereotypes In Movies

"Earlier today a friend and I were discussing how the entertainment world has stereotyped people, woman in particular. We discussed how annoying it is when a female character is the typical damsel in distress and cries for help from the big brave man in the story. Then I realized that there were really two main female stereotypes regarding woman, both annoying.

1. Damsel In Distress:

I believe this originated from knights and chivalry and had more to do with the middle age culture, where it would have been offensive to a man, if a woman didn't allow them to open a door for them, lay a coat across a mud puddle, or save the helpless female from the big bad dragon. From that came movies and books portraying the woman as a weak, helpless, person who could never seem to keep herself out of trouble, ever rescued by the mighty, male hero.

2. Mighty Maiden:

After so much stereotyping and cookie cutter character modeling, we began to compensate, or possibly overcompensate. I believe it probably started around WW1 when, because of the draft, most of the men left for war, leaving the woman to get a job and begin to fend for themselves and their children. Media, of course, followed the trend and began making stronger female roles in movies, books, etc. Suddenly it began to be common for the woman to rescue the man in the story, and woman were put in authority roles as the president, leader, or other roles were they commanded respect and equality."

------------------ -- -------------------

"Although we both agreed that either was annoying, when overdone, we began arguing as to which one was more annoying, damsels in distress or authoritative females who can rescue themselves if not the man too.

Which one do you believe is more overdone and/or annoying? Which one sends a better message?"

Tiger Woods Apologizes for his Behavior [Ar1as Exclusive] +18

THE ANALYSIS:
Isn't it the year of the Tiger? It certainly is! Well, its not so great right now for Mr. Woods but it sure is for the rest of the world as this provides highly entertaining material (just Google Tiger Woods and you will see what I'm talking about).

I watched a re-run of the televised apology that Tiger Woods delivered straight from some golf club in Florida and it had no effect on me whatsoever!

It was such a controlled scenario and everything seemed scripted! Even the part where Tiger goes over to hug his mother. Some genius probably said; " I think it will be a powerful sign to the viewers at home if you hug your mom, what do you think Tiger?"

What bothered me the most was that his apology was probably written by a group of individuals under supervision of Woods himself. In other words, everything he said was not his own insight, thoughts, opinion, and feelings. What a scam!

Also, reporters weren't allowed to ask questions...wait a minute...i don't think there were even any reporters present, just photographers (probably from Nike or some of Tiger's homies).

But i think we are all being too harsh on Tiger. Think about it, i bet when he was a nobody and had no money, that he never got any pussy! So, they give the guy a little fame and a couple million bucks and the man goes insane with all the "freebies." Wouldn't you?

The gold-diggers and fame-whores soon would follow suit. When you have so many women throwing themselves at you and you previously never had any, well, you just take it! All of it! Mine, mine, mine! Any sane man would. Don't you dare deny this! The ladies, well, they are a bit different. There's basically two categories in this case;
  1. The gold-diggers (these accept gifts, fancy dinners, rides in expensive cars and in return they give him sex. But, they justify every gift as him being sweet, caring, considerate, loving, etc. Whores! I mean they knew he was married, they knew!!!! Shame on you too! The more "mature" species? Right... ) [Tiger hooked up with these...]
  2. The Romantics (these think that what Woods has done is unforgivable, dishonest, hideous, etc etc ) [the former Gold-diggers now turned into these]

THE FUTURE:
Here's whats going to happen in the next couple of months:
  • Tiger will go to some fancy "rehab," where he will supposedly "recover" from a nonexistent psychological problem. He will then be seen receiving advice from David Duchovny and Kim Kardashian.
  • Tiger will play a couple more Golf tournaments and he wont receive as much praise as he once did for his game but he will nonetheless make a ton of cash! (the wife will be happy)
  • Interviews, television appearances, TV ads where he will be shown being a sweet and caring individual will follow suit.
  • If it weren't for Tiger Woods, Nike wouldn't sell ANY Golf related merchandise and therefore his contract will be renewed (Nike will probably pitch in some "humanitarian" and "socially conscious" ad campaigns and events for Tiger Woods, this will help erase all wrong doings from your memory)
  • Most women will still view him as a piece of sh*t, scumbag, asshole, cheater, etc etc but that won't matter because Wood's primary audience and market target is men anyway. Sorry ladies.
  • Then one day all harm will be a thing of the past, Tiger will continue to play the same boring game against the same group of boring men, and this whole fiasco will only cause a few laughs here and there. The people will forgive you Tiger! Just as they did to Bill Clinton, Kobe Bryant, Sarah Palin...the list goes on and on.

Shutter Island [movie review] 2010

Starring: Leonardo Di Caprio, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Mark Ruffalo
Director:
Martin Scorsese
Writer(s): Laeta Kalogridis (screenplay)
Based On: Novel by Dennis Lehane
Filmed At: Maine & Massachusetts, USA
Rated: R ; disturbing violent content, language & some nudity.

THE FAN:

"Really, Scorsese should just give it away for anyone. The man is one of the most brilliant directors of our time.

Anyway, let me get to the actual movie; I just saw it at a early screening and have to write this while I'm thinking about how stunning it was. Shutter Island is certainly not a typical film, not even for Scorsese. It is a different take for the director, and he does it, as he does every film, perfectly, so much as to be in his own league of film-making.

I don't want to give anything away, but I will say this: Shutter Island was completely unexpected, and a great start to 2010. It had all the components of a great film, and then some. The acting is spot on from every character; none of it seems forged or out of place. The script is fantastic; it has one of the most intriguing plots I have seen in a while (exception being Tarantino's Basterds). Everything, down to the set's lighting, was perfectly executed.

Not everyone will like this; Shutter Island, again, isn't your typical movie. To those, though, who do choose to see this film, be ready for a compelling, gripping, thought-provoking experience, so much so that you might think to see it again for further clarity (I know I will; it was so entertaining and my mind was blown!). Don't be surprised if you see this at the next Oscars... "

-author, Trevor Todd

THE ANTI-FAN:

"Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island reminds me of Hitchcock's successful Vertigo, Psycho, and most of all, Spellbound, without the success. The mentally unstable characters who provided Hitchcock hints of utter depravity in those classics in Shutter Island mainly serve facile plot twists.

Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a federal marshal who, with his partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) goes to Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane in 1954 to investigate the escape of a notorious murderess of her own three children. Almost everyone at that Boston harbor institution besides the patients seems a bit off center, even Teddy, who brings some psychological baggage to the job.

While the cinematography is appropriately claustrophobic and the 19th century industrial brick insane asylum and its accompanying Civil War fort reminiscent of Silence of the Lambs with a touch of Alcatraz, the plot twists are indiscriminately telegraphed while Teddy's recurring visions of his deceased wife are too many and annoying. As the resident shrink, Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) is much smoother than Lambs' Dr. Chilton (Anthony Heald) but not half as fun. Nor is there a villain who can come close to Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter. Although Teddy is the center of the film, Scorsese spends too many frames on tortured close-ups, as if he were making sure that DiCaprio is nominated for an Oscar next year.

The film should have expanded the role of Dr. Naehring, head of the hospital, because the estimable Max von Sydow could have saved the film from boredom as the twists are telegraphed obviously and way too bluntly. In its favor, Scorsese plays deftly, if not a bit too obviously, with different camera angles such as bird's eye and visual images such as bright red blood, reminiscent of the stunning work in Sam Mendes' American Beauty.

When you've directed Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull, you have a tough time topping yourself. Shutter Island is not a film to be ashamed of; it's just not as good as his greats."

-author, John DeSando

Not Just A Scribble [Daniel, Owner of Sigs & Stuff]

An Interview with Daniel (autograph connoisseur) owner of Sigs & Stuff

-Ar1as.com: Hey Daniel. Thanks for taking the time to have a moment to talk to us. I gotta admit, it was very hard to try and get this interview. Thanks again. Tell us, Daniel, what is Sigs & Stuff all about?

Daniel (S&S):Ar1as, first I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to share my story with you! I have been a collector of sports & celebrity autographs/collectibles for 20 years.
Sigs & Stuff is basically the name of my YouTube and Twitter accounts. I primarily sell sporting event tickets, autographs (if I happen to get multiples!), and of course the occasional junk in the house! On Youtube you can view videos of interesting run-ins I had with celebrities. My Twitter site is my chance to inform the people about the latest events where you can score yourself an autograph! How cool is that? I do the research and you just map-quest and load up on sharpies!

-Ar1as.com: Why did you start collecting autographs?

Daniel (S&S): Well, I think it all started in the late 80's going to Dodgers games with my father. After each game I would notice throngs of people gathering around a particular fenced area just outside the stadium. Curiosity got the best of me and I asked my father if we could see what was going on. Lo and behold, Dodgers players were parked within this fenced area. As they'd exit most would oblige and give autographs to the fans. Back then I never thought much of the chicken-scratch they would put on my glove or baseball card.

-Ar1as.com: So at first, was it about the autographs or...

Daniel (S&S): It was more of a "Wow, I just talked to Mike Piazza or Orel Hershiser!" But many years later I could look back on an autograph and not just have a scribble but most importantly, a memory. I still get a little adrenaline rush and a little star struck with famous people but ultimately I'm left with a time and place in history! I can look back at about 99% of my collection and tell you exactly when, where, and how I got it! Collecting autographs never gets old my friend!

-Ar1as.com: Mike Piazza? Wow! Guess one never really gets used to dealing with so many different celebrities. Its always exciting, right?

Daniel (S&S): Yeah it sure is exciting! Every star is different so i receive them with different enthusiasm but it never gets old! I'm always excited and thrilled to meet them. I mean, just the other day I was literally hanging out on a golf course with Donald Trump, Mark Wahlberg and two stars from the popular TV hit "Entourage"!

-Ar1as.com: What are your top 5 signatures of all time?

Daniel (S&S): That's a tough one Ar1as! Off the top of my head I'll go
with...Heidi Klum, Salma Hayek, Shaquille O'Neal, Chick Hearn and
Lebron James.

-Ar1as.com: That's awesome! Do you also sell your autographs? And
what else do you do with your collection?

Daniel (S&S): I only sell duplicate copies. With my collection, I keep a few displayed and the rest I store away to keep them in pristine condition. I'm paranoid about fading! I do bring them out when guests come over! lol. I also give them away as prizes and gifts to those who follow me on Twitter and on Youtube! So sign up you guys so you can get some cool things!

-Ar1as.com: That's great that you give back to your fans! Daniel, what lies ahead in the future for Sigs & Stuff?

Daniel (S&S): Well, that's a great question. I definitely want to provide more content for my Youtube account. Ive been getting a lot of positive feedback for my celebrity videos and I'm looking to collect more autographs and to inform fans of future celebrity signings and events here in the Los Angeles area.

-Ar1as.com:Thanks again for your time and we hope to hear from you soon here at Ar1as.com !

Daniel (S&S): It's an honor to be here! And i can definitely see us working together. So stay tuned guys and gals! Here is more of my work:

Donald "The Donald" Trump - American business magnate, socialite, author and television personality.

Cordozar "Snoop Dogg" Calvin Broadus - American rapper, record producer and actor.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson - American NBA Hall of Famer, Spokesperson

Kim Kardashian - American/Armenian Socialite & Reality TV Star

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief [movie review] 2010

Happy Valentine's Day & Happy Chinese New Year

Starring: Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Jake Abel, Sean Bean, Catherine Keener, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Rosario Dawson
Director: Chris Columbus
Writer(s): Craig Titley (screenplay)
Based On: Novel by Rick Riordan
Filmed At: British Columbia, Canada
Rated: PG ; action violence & peril, some scary images, suggestive material, & mild language.

"Now that the Harry Potter film series is nearing its end, Hollywood is scrambling to find another series of young-adult fantasy novels to mine into movies. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, the first in Rick Riordan's bestselling series of books, may not be so deep or richly imagined as J.K. Rowling's universe of magic and Muggles, but the film is populated by likable characters, great special effects and a neat premise: Teenagers who discover they are the offspring of Greek gods who mated with mortals.

Percy (Logan Lerman), the eponymous hero, is an ordinary high-school student who starts to suspect something's up when he begins to hear strange voices, and one of his teachers turns into a gorgon and attacks him (usually a dead giveaway that something magical is afoot). After his mother (Catherine Keener) reveals his true heritage, Percy is taken in by a gang of other kids with mythical powers -- demi-gods -- and is trained to do battle against the forces of evil.

photos courtesy of Fox

Director Chris Columbus, who also directed the first two Potter pictures, gives the movie a sprightly pace and a snazzy visual design that helps all the exposition go down smoothly. He also peppers the cast with strong actors, including Pierce Brosnan as a centaur, Uma Thurman as an enjoyably wicked Medusa, Sean Bean as Zeus and Rosario Dawson as Persephone, and their presence helps keep adults as entertained as the target teen audience.

Unlike most opening installments in an intended franchise, The Lightning Thief doesn't get bogged down in back-story, and Columbus whips up visions of Mount Olympus and Hades that actually inspire wonder and awe. In contrast to last year's Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, the flop first chapter of an intended series, The Lightning Thief makes the idea of a sequel seem like an inviting proposition."

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen [British Fashion Designer]

"The death of designer Alexander McQueen (16 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) strikes at the fashion industry's creative core, not because he had the most lucrative business or because he launched the greatest number of trends that trickled down to suburban malls. Instead, McQueen represented the kind of volatile imagination that transforms clothes into a cultural tapestry, intensely personal therapy and political provocation. " Full report.

I Knew It! He F*cken Cheated! (Venus Speaks) +18

"Don't ignore your gut instincts... don't ignore when you feel something, you know, you just know, you can't deny... when people are "shifty" and they won't give straight answers... I hate to be right, I fucking HATE to be right... but the time-line of evidence is just too coincidental to not be true.

It makes sense that since, even from the beginning, I saw and felt, and well, always want to give people the benefit of the doubt... and I feel sick to my stomach, and it all makes sense... And I think I know in my mind and heart it's confirmed. I feel sick and I'm not really sure what to do, how to feel...

I suppose it can be argued that it all happened before we got together... but the fact that he lied the whole time, and really, my morals are that I WILL not touch a guy who I know has a gf... And the main thing that it all comes down to? Honesty, trust, respect... lies. My read on things, was, as much as I wish it weren't true, completely right. And I feel sick to my stomach.

I'm pretty sure he was with his ex-gf all the way up until we got together (so yeah, really, didn't sleep with anyone else, I find that hard to believe). It all kinda makes sense, I was suspicious of a few things for a while, like his ex going to a baby shower for his cousin, if they had really been broken up for hella' long, why would she ever get invited? Also Disneyland, and exchanging things a few months later... and now it DOES make sense! Wtf* am I supposed to think? Why didn't I push for answers earlier?

*wtf = what the fuck, The 'W' can be used as what, where, who or when, following by the 'TF' which is always 'the fuck'

There's always that small glimmer of... "but maybe there will be some kind of loophole so I can feel better about this and justified for staying... but the thing is, I just will never ever know if he would cheat on me, if he would throw the same disregard in my face... who knows if things started "dragging out" at the end, that I'd end up a fool once more..." I could never really trust that! Who knows, it could be the same... weekends with me, the week with someone else? Who knows...

Have your cake and it eat too, indeed.

The problem with this... it hits on EVERY fear and trust issue I have. The whole problem with my first love, the guy who has my name f-ing tattooed to his arm?, is that he cheated on me for the last 6 months of our relationship... I knew, I had that feeling, that fear, and aside from the betrayal, what has damaged me the most and makes me the most paranoid is the fact that it went on under my nose the whole time, and we were LIVING TOGETHER!!!!!

And so this hits me too, particularly hard, because of the dishonesty, and lying to my face and deception... False sense of security. They all tell you what you want to hear, they tell you how much they love you, and you know, even with my ex, I believed the things he said and I do, he meant them... and that was always the hardest part... despite his fucked up actions, he was sincere, but he couldn't control himself or really do what he needed to do to truly love me and NOT hurt me. He crushed me, and I feel crushed again... every time I get to the point of giving, of trying to do all the morally right things, I'm rewarded with people who can't seem to have the same consideration... I think I'm fucked up, so "like" attracts like.

Never let your guard down. I'm a fool for having tried.

I feel fucking wrecked."

"The preposterously silly and bullet-riddled From Paris With Love is so leaden and obnoxious that it actually makes you long for the John Travolta of Old Dogs.

Well, maybe that's a stretch. But Travolta overplays his trigger-happy, racist, sexist character so much that he qualifies as one of the most annoying screen presences ever. This is meant to be a mismatched buddy spy thriller, but it's hard to imagine who would possibly want to be his buddy.

Paris is intended as both an action movie and a comic parody of the genre. But the clichéd hybrid goes over like a lead balloon stuck on the Eiffel Tower..

The bad guys uniformly are dark-skinned-Asians, and at least one of the key Americans is defiantly ugly. That would be American spy Charlie Wax, played by a shaved-headed, dark-goateed Travolta. He's bad, but he's light-years away from cool. He spouts inane catchphrases like "Wax on, wax off," the Karate Kid line which, when defiantly leveled at a bevy of Asians, is nothing short of offensive. He has no discernible relationships with people but gets plenty worked up by weaponry. The bigger the munitions, the more passionate he becomes. Another favorite phrase pertains to his affection for his beloved jumbo assault weapon: "Me and Mrs. Jones," he coos.

In contrast, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers plays James Reese, a chess-playing, Cambridge-educated American aide to the U.S. ambassador (Richard Durden) in Paris. He has a beautiful girlfriend, Caroline (Kasia Smutniak), but they are plagued by bouts of romance interruptus when Reese gets mysterious calls for his low-level CIA services. He's a small-time operative but yearns to be an agent. He's not as obnoxious as Wax, but he's a damn fool, especially in matters of the heart.

Travolta and Rhys-Meyers lack any visible chemistry. Then, inexplicably, there's a tender moment that blossoms between them. It's as if director Pierre Morel suddenly remembered he was making a buddy thriller. Morel more skillfully directed last year's Taken, which at least offered a new twist on a kidnapping story.

Between Adi Hasak's offensive and occasionally laughable screenplay and Morel's dull direction, the film is a mess. And the actors manage to muck things up even further.

Wax and Reese's first assignment is to take down a Chinese drug ring. But their job gets murkier and results in their unraveling a massive terrorist plot. Audiences are likely to figure out a key double-crossing scheme early on. But Reese, despite his intellectualism, is astoundingly clueless. He's also insipid. Still, his blandness is preferable to Wax's obstreperous bravado and toxic shtick. Travolta appears to be having fun double-handedly wielding firearms and firing a bazooka on a crowded freeway. But that dubious enjoyment doesn't translate in any way to the viewer."
